The project to build a bridge between Sakhalin and the mainland was discussed by the governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko, with the general director and chairman of the board of directors of Russian Railways OJSC Oleg Belozerov, the press service of the government of the Sakhalin region May 8.
The key topic of the meeting was the project for the construction of the Selikhin-Nysh railway line, which will connect Sakhalin with the Khabarovsk Territory through the Nevelskoy Strait. According to the project, the bridge crossing should become an alternative route for the transportation of goods between Sakhalin and other regions of the Far East, which will effectively distribute cargo flows and reduce the load on coastal ports.
The meeting also discussed the integration of the railway into the overall urban transport system of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The solution is included in the master plan of the regional center and is aimed at improving the road situation in the area between Khristoforovka and Novoaleksandrovka. By September 2024, two new railway sidings will appear in Lugovoi and Bolshaya Elani.
In addition, since 2023, regional authorities have been working to expand the route network and increase the frequency of commuter trains within the boundaries of the Yuzhno-Sakhalin urban agglomeration. This year, two new routes will be opened at once: Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk – Dolinsk and Korsakov – Dolinsk.
Let us remember that the Sakhalin region is the only region of Russia located entirely on islands. It includes the island of Sakhalin with the adjacent small islands of Moneron and Tyuleniy, as well as the Kuril Islands. It is washed by the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.
