Cuba and Russia celebrate the 64th anniversary of the reestablishment of their diplomatic relations as part of the visit to Russia of the President of the Caribbean Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel. This was reported by Prensa Latina on May 8.
Díaz-Canel arrived in Moscow on a working visit on May 7. The Cuban delegation headed by the President placed flowers at the monument to Fidel Castro in the Russian capital.
He also met with the deputy head of the Russian Security Council and president of United Russia, Dmitry Medvedev. In the afternoon, Díaz-Canel will participate in an expanded format in the anniversary meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council as leader of an observer State.
TASS, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assistant Yuri Ushakov, reports that after the Cuban president’s participation in the May 9 parade, he will hold talks with Putin. According to Ushakov, the leaders of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cuba will discuss the entire range of multifaceted bilateral relations. The negotiations will take place in two rounds: first in a reduced format and then the delegations will join the presidents.
Prensa Latina reports that the Cuban president hopes to discuss with Putin all areas of interaction between Russia and Cuba.
The Cuban Agency recalled that Russia and Cuba officially announced the reestablishment of their diplomatic relations on May 8, 1960. They were dissolved in 1952 by the dictator Fulgencio Batista due to their political dependence on the United States.
Then, the victory of the Cuban Revolution made it possible to reestablish diplomatic ties between the USSR and Cuba on the basis of mutual sympathy between both peoples and a common desire for justice.
