On May 8, the All-Russian team saber fencing competitions among young people under 18 years of age were held in St. Petersburg, the press service of the Russian Fencing Federation reported.
The fate of the first place in the tournament was decided in a dramatic meeting between the first teams from St. Petersburg (T. Babkin, N. Bodrov-Subetto, K. Polishchuk, N. Chaplygin) and the Olympic reserve sports school of the Association of Moscow City Sports and Physical Culture (MGFSO) (Yu. Kartsev, A. Nikitin, P. Fomin, M. Khovanov). The fencers from St. Petersburg won the first bout and then led the score for two-thirds of the match. However, then the MGFSO athletes showed character and, having won two of the remaining three fights, in the end they won with 45:40.
Third place was taken by the team from the Vologda region, represented by athletes from the Cherepovets “Martial Arts Center” sports school (K. Grigoriev, G. Ionin, K. Smirnov). In the bronze medal match they literally snatched victory from the third team of the Northern capital with a score of 45:44. A total of 13 national teams participated in the competition in memory of the two-time Olympic champion ET Vinokurov.
