At least three Afghan security forces were killed and five others were wounded in an explosion targeting a convoy of Taliban vehicles in the northeast of the country.
“In this incident, three policemen were killed and five were injured,” Zabihullah Amiri, director of the Badakhshan provincial directorate of information and culture, told Spanish news agency EFE.
The incident occurred around 12:00 (07:30 Lisbon time) in the city of Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan province, the same official added.
The explosive device was planted in a motorcycle and exploded as police vehicles involved in the destruction of opium plantations drove past, Amiri added.
To date, no organization has claimed responsibility for this attack.
The extremist group Islamic State, which emerged as the Taliban’s main rival after the withdrawal of international troops, has claimed responsibility for almost all attacks since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
Although the Taliban insists on denying that the militant group poses a security threat, the Islamic State of Khorasan, the terrorist group’s Afghan affiliate, has emerged as a major threat to the country’s stability.
On March 21, at least 23 people were killed and 60 injured when a massive explosion rocked the offices of a banking institution in the city of Kandahar.
Daesh claimed responsibility for the March attack.
