The country’s institutions suffer from “structural corruption,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on May 8, BNN reported.
The Colombian president’s announcement comes after a recent bribery scandal involving his political allies.
“Being on the left is not a vaccine against corruption, it is in all parties and in all corners”Gustavo Petro said in a televised speech. — “Our job and our duty is to fight this.”.
Former officials at the government disaster management agency said they confiscated funds intended to provide drinking water to the region to bribe members of Congress to vote in favor of Gustavo Petro’s reforms. All government officials close to Petro and lawmakers accused in the scandal have denied wrongdoing.
The bribery scandal could make it difficult for Gustavo Petro’s government to push pension reform through Congress, according to an assessment by policy research center Teneo.
