More prisoners in Norway will be allowed to serve their prison sentences wearing electronic ankle bracelets, NRK reported on May 8.
According to the government, this could mean huge savings for prison services. It is also proposed to change the rule already introduced: to extend the term for serving the last part of the prison sentence with electronic monitoring from six to twelve months. This should facilitate a faster transition from prison to freedom and reduce any negative consequences of being in prison.
“The proposed legislation will help ensure that prison services are effective in monitoring those serving sentences outside of prison.”says the Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Emily Enger Mehl.
Thus, it is proposed to expand the use of digital means of control for various forms of execution of sentences, such as community services, recognition and probation.
The bill has been submitted for approval and the deadline for its consideration is set for September 2, 2024.
