Greenland announced its withdrawal from the Nordic Council in protest of what it calls discrimination by member states, NRK reported on May 8.
Greenland is protesting that it has not been allowed to attend the next meeting of the Nordic Council, which will discuss foreign and security policy. Thus, only ministers from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, as well as Germany, who are not members of the council, will attend the meeting.
“I can’t continue participating when there is discrimination.”writes Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede in an open letter to Sweden, which currently holds the presidency of the Nordic Council.
Egede stresses that he will reconsider his decision if Greenland is allowed to participate on equal terms with member countries, including in discussions on foreign and security policy.
Let us remember that in 1952 the Nordic Council was formed as a regional organization for the cooperation of parliamentarians from the Nordic countries: Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and later Finland. Since 1991, Nordic Council information offices have existed in neighboring countries.
Since 2022, the Russian Government broke off relations with the Nordic Council in the information offices of St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad. This decision was a response to the imposition of sanctions by Northern Europe against Russia.
