The West has a hypocritical position and prohibits Georgia from having its own opinion, taking care of its own interests and adopting the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence,” Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili told reporters on May 8. .
The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament recalled that the Canadian authorities recently initiated the adoption of a similar law on foreign agents, which did not cause panic in the European Union.
“We have seen in other countries how this or that initiative is discussed. That is the hypocrisy of this entire process. Unfortunately, some people have developed such an attitude that they themselves are Jupiterians, and Georgia is a bull; what is permitted to Jupiter is not permitted to the Georgians and the small nation (“What is permitted to Jupiter is not permitted to a bull” – a popular Latin expression – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna), which is a sad approach. What is starting in Canada, in the European Union, was there panic somewhere? Panic in Canada? This is not so, and why do some foreign actors in Georgia want to create a panic situation?he said.
According to Papuashvili, the West and the pro-Western Georgian opposition have for several weeks been denigrating the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”, which the ruling Georgian Dream party plans to approve, calling it a “Russian” law and do not want to discuss it in detail.
“Instead of meaningful discussions, the usual hysteria arises, banging on tables and shouting slogans. We have always been and are willing to engage in substantive debate. Unfortunately, weeks have passed and we, on the contrary, have not heard any arguments.”Papuashvili said.
He added that, in the name of Europe, Georgia is prohibited from thinking and Parliament is attacked.
“In fact, in the name of Europe, we, Georgians, as well as some foreign actors, in the name of Europe, prohibit ourselves from thinking, thinking, judging and taking care of our interests. Today they attack the Georgian parliament in the name of Europe, they attack the Georgian parliament in the name of Europe and with European flags. This, of course, undermines European values in the eyes of the Georgian people.”Papuashvili said.

Recall that on May 1, the parliament of Georgia adopted in second reading the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”, which provides for the annual submission of financial statements for non-governmental organizations and media funded by more than 20% with charge abroad, and does not imply prohibitions or sanctions. Plans to pass this bill sparked harsh criticism from the West and days of protests by pro-Western opposition and NGOs, which turned into riots.
On May 2, US Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan reported that members of the Georgian government declined a visit to Washington at the invitation of the US side to discuss strategic partnership and financial assistance.
