On May 9, 2024, Russia will celebrate the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. What is planned for this day – in the review IA Krasnaya Vesna.
Victory Parade on Red Square
Traditionally, the Victory Parade in Moscow will take place on the morning of May 9. It will start at 10:00 Moscow time and will last about two hours. This is the main event as part of the Victory Day celebrations. If there is no invitation, you will not be able to access the stands in front of GUM. However, on the streets of Moscow you can see the team moving towards the parade site. The parade will be broadcast on television.
As in previous years, the parade will begin with the removal of the Russian flag and the Victory Banner. Next, Russian President Vladimir Putin will give a speech to participants in the march, guests and citizens of the country. There will be a minute of silence.
Then the main part of the parade will begin: a solemn procession of military personnel and military equipment of different types of troops of the Russian Armed Forces. In 2024, participants from the zone of special military operations in Ukraine will also join the Victory Parade. In total, more than 9 thousand people will participate in the event.
As for military equipment, this year the public will be shown more than 70 historical and modern weapons. Among the parade participants will be Yars strategic missile systems, Boomerang armored personnel carriers, BTR-82A and S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.
If weather permits, planes from the Russian Knights and Swifts aviation groups will also fly over Red Square.
Who will come to the parade?
As in previous years, leaders from different states were invited to the Victory Parade. In 2024, leaders from nine countries will attend the event in Moscow.
These are the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, who will come to Russia on a two-day working visit, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, the President of Turkmenistan Serdar. Berdimuhamedov, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau Sisoku Embalo.
Several politicians refused to attend the Victory Parade in Moscow. According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will not attend the parade. According to Pashinyan, the annual presence of the country’s leader at the Victory Parade in Moscow is strange.
“Last year I participated in the May 9 events in Moscow and I don’t think it is necessary to participate every year. “I don’t remember such a practice that the leader of Armenia or any state participated in every year.”Pashinyan said. However, he plans to be in Moscow on May 8 to participate in the anniversary summit of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (ASEC) and meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev will also not attend the parade in Moscow. According to Ushakov, this is because ceremonial events in memory of Heydar Aliyev, the father of the current Head of State, will be held in Azerbaijan on May 9.
Parades in Russian regions
In several regions of Russia, the traditional May 9 parades will not be held. The adjustments were made due to the threat of possible sabotage by Ukraine. Thus, the solemn Victory Parade was canceled in 27 regions of Russia, including the border areas: in the Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Crimea and Sevastopol regions, as well as in the new Russian regions (DPR, LPR, Kherson regions and Zaporozhye). .
In several cities, processions will take place without spectators: in Novorossiysk, Yekaterinburg and Rostov-on-Don.
Immediately 65 regions canceled their Christmas fireworks shows, including Moscow and the Moscow region.
There will be no march of the Immortal Regiment
The “Immortal Regiment” procession in 2024 will not take place in person, neither in Moscow nor in the regions. This became known on April 23. The decision was made for security reasons.
According to Elena Tsunaeva, co-chair of the headquarters of the All-Russian public movement “Immortal Regiment of Russia” and a State Duma deputy, other celebration formats have been prepared for 2024. She proposed holding an “Immortal Regiment” campaign on public transport, placing portraits of heroes of the Great Patriotic War, even on cars.
The head of the executive committee of the Immortal Regiment of Russia, Natalya Shadrina, noted that on May 9, portraits of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War will be broadcast on the polkrf.ru website.
On May 8, State Duma deputy Yana Lantratova proposed to the vice president of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, to postpone the march of the “Immortal Regiment” until July or September.
