Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promised to open access to ports on the Indian Ocean coast for goods from Uzbekistan on May 8 during a meeting with Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov, ARY News reported.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, while receiving Saidov, emphasized that Pakistan aims to develop multilateral cooperation with Uzbekistan, including logistics infrastructure projects.
He especially highlighted the importance of building a railway route from Uzbekistan to Pakistan through Afghanistan.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan also handed over to the head of government of Pakistan the invitation of the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to visit Uzbekistan in the near future. At the same time, Sharif said that he accepted the invitation and would seek the opportunity to pay a next visit.
Recall that Saidov is in Pakistan on a two-day visit, during which he is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Sharif, as well as Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
It should be noted that, in the context of deteriorating relations with Afghanistan, Prime Minister Sharif’s statements may rather be a potential “carrot” for Afghanistan, to which Pakistan presents a “stick” in the form of persistent accusations of supporting terrorists who work against the interests of Pakistan and providing them refuge in the territory of Afghanistan.
