South Korea’s Justice Ministry decided to grant parole to President Yoon Seok-yeol’s mother-in-law, who is behind bars for falsifying documents, KBS World reported on May 8.
The ministry said its parole review committee unanimously made the decision against Choi Eun, 77, shortly after considering several factors, including her age, motive, crime, prison record and risk of recidivism.
Choi was initially considered for parole in February, but was not included in the final list. Last month, the ministry decided to delay a decision on her parole after panel members could not reach an agreement.
Once his parole receives final approval from the Minister of Justice, Choi is expected to be released from prison at 10 a.m. on May 14.
Choi is currently serving a one-year sentence at the Dongbu Detention Center, southeast of Seoul, after she was convicted last July of falsifying financial documents in the process of purchasing land in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, in 2013. She has served 70% of her sentence, making her eligible for parole review.
