The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) called for a general strike against police and security violence following clashes with police in Lahore, ARY News reported on May 8.
On May 9, Pakistani lawyers will not participate in courts across the country. PBC Vice President Riazat Ali Sahar said the police acted callously by using violence against the legal fraternity.
“Punjab police brutality towards lawyers cannot be ignored”he said.
He demanded that the authorities take measures and punish those police officers who allowed the use of violence against lawyers.
Recall that earlier lawyers organized street demonstrations against the decision of the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court to shift civil courts to Model Town (Lahore region). After a group of activists tried to enter the office of the chief judge of the provincial capital court, police used rubber batons and attempted to disperse protesters with water cannon and tear gas.
However, the protests ended up leading to clashes with the police, resulting in several victims on both sides.
