Sao Tome and Principe signed a military-technical agreement with Russia that provides for training, the use of weapons and military equipment, as well as visits to the archipelago by Russian aircraft, warships and vessels, a government source told Lusa.
A source in the Ministry of Defense and the internal administration of Sao Tome and Principe confirmed to Lusa that the agreement was signed “for an indefinite period,” the official Russian news agency Sputnik reported.
According to the Russian agency, the agreement was signed in St. Petersburg on April 24 and began to be implemented on May 5.
Russia’s TASS also reported a meeting that day in Moscow between the head of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, and the Defense Minister of Sao Tome and Principe, Jorge Amado, to discuss “issues of mutual interest.”
According to the Russian press, the parties agreed to cooperate in the areas of joint training of troops, recruitment of armed forces, use of weapons and military equipment, logistics support, exchange of experience and information in the framework of the fight against the ideology of extremism and international terrorism, education and training.
In addition, the agreement between the two countries provides for participation in military exercises and presence as observers, visits by military aircraft, as well as visits by warships and vessels.
Sputnik cited the agreement as saying that military cooperation between the countries “contributes to strengthening international peace and stability.”
