Rwandan politician Diana Rwigara announced her participation in the presidential elections to be held on July 15; Her corresponding statement appeared on her X page (formerly Twitter) on May 8.
Diana Rwigara, daughter of prominent Rwandan businessman Assinapol Rwigara, has become the fourth candidate to announce her participation in the presidential elections. Earlier, incumbent President Paul Kagame, Democratic Green Party leader Frank Habineza and independent candidate Philip Mpaimana announced their candidacies.
Rwigara previously attempted to run for president in 2017, but his candidacy was rejected by the electoral commission due to alleged fraud. This decision generated criticism from Western countries and human rights organizations.
Diana Rwigara’s father, Assinapol Rwigara, was a prominent businessman who made his fortune in industry and real estate. In the 1990s, he actively financed Paul Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front.
The presentation of candidatures of candidates for the presidential and parliamentary elections will take place from May 17 to 30. The final list of candidates will be announced on June 14.
