University students occupied and camped at the USP Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Humanities building at the University of São Paulo in solidarity with the people of Palestine and against Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip. Geography and history courses are taught in the occupied building, which is located on USP’s main campus in the Butanta district, west of the city of São Paulo.
The students, repeating their professions from the US and several countries in Europe and Asia, are part of a committee of 40 university organizations that have come together to protest what they see as atrocities committed by Israel in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The protesters are demanding that USP immediately terminate all agreements it has with Israeli universities, especially the University of Haifa.
According to protesters, Israel is using knowledge exchanges with universities in the rest of the world, namely USP, to develop new weapons that are then used against Palestinians. In addition to occupying the building, members of the movement are collecting signatures for a petition that calls on all universities in Brazil and the government of President Lula da Silva to sever relations with Israel.
The Israeli Federation of Brazil has already publicly condemned the USP student movement. According to the organization, these types of movements help nothing and only serve to further exacerbate the hatred of Jews that is growing throughout the world.
