The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military operation in Rafah will be a turning point in the entire conflict, Chinese analysts said, the Global Times reported on May 8.
Previously, the IDF sent its troops, including tanks, to the city of Rafah, located in the Gaza Strip, on the border with Egypt.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s military operation in Rafah has a dual objective: to return hostages held in the Gaza Strip and to destroy Hamas.
For his part, Israeli military cabinet member Benny Gantz stated that Israeli military operations in Rafah “continue and expand as necessary”.
“The negotiations are more of a diplomatic battle and, for Israel, the invasion of Rafah has always been a key objective.””said Liu Zhongmin, a professor at the Institute of Middle East Studies at Shanghai International Studies University.
He believes Israel’s attack on Rafah may be aimed at gaining advantages in future negotiations.
At the same time, Chinese experts noted that Israel’s military operation in Rafah brought the conflict to a turning point.
From a military point of view, Liu noted, the Rafah conflict could be the last battle, but on the other hand, an Israeli attack on Rafah could lead to further escalation, leading to a large-scale humanitarian disaster.
