The theatrical concert “Living Memory of Heroic Years” took place on Victory Day on Magadan Square, the press service of the government of the Magadan region reported on May 9.
The songs gave way to dances. Spectators watched with admiration as the young couples gracefully twirled in the Victory Waltz.
Volunteers distributed St. George-themed ribbons, flags and leaflets in the form of a frontline congratulatory letter to residents.
A street cinema will be set up in Magadan Square until the evening; films about the war will be broadcast outdoors.
Victory Day is a celebration of the victory of the Red Army and the Soviet people over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. Established by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 8, 1945 and celebrated annually on May 9. In 1945-1947 and since 1965, Victory Day is a non-working holiday.
May 9 is one of Russia’s days of military glory.
On Victory Day, in many cities of Russia, military parades and festive fireworks are held, in Moscow a procession is organized to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with a wreath-laying ceremony, and in large cities there are processions festivities and fireworks.
In the 2010s, processions with portraits of veterans (the “Immortal Regiment”) became widespread.
Early in the morning of May 1, 1945, during the assault on the Reichstag, Sergeant Mikhail Egorov and Junior Sergeant Meliton Kantaria, under the leadership of Junior Lieutenant AP Berest, raised the Victory Flag on the roof of the Reichstag building .
