On Thursday, it was announced that the PNP had detained a man in Matosinhos, Porto district, suspected of capturing birds using traps, nets and bait, and rescued 52 species of birds that were in captivity.
The GNR said in a statement that a 52-year-old suspect in a crime causing damage to nature was arrested on Wednesday as part of an environmental action.
SEPNA officers involved in the action discovered an outbuilding of a residential building where several native birds were found in captivity.
The GNR stressed that during the action it could be understood that the suspect was catching birds by “unauthorized means and methods”, namely through hatches, nets and baits, an offense punishable by up to five years in prison.
As part of this action, the People’s Republic seized 24 goldfinches, 19 greenfinches, four blackbirds, three thrushes, a jay and a magpie.
Also seized were 47 cages/hatches, several networks, memory cards, radios and speakers.
