YouTube with features to help voters find credible news about the European elections

YouTube, Google’s video-sharing platform, this Thursday released a set of features to help voters find credible “news and information” about the European elections and increase transparency in artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content.

A month before the European elections, YouTube reveals the “efforts” it is making to help people “in Europe and beyond find useful and reliable news and information about the elections”, from finding a polling station to understanding candidate positions, among other things. according to the online publication of the platform team.

“For the 2024 European Parliament elections, here are some of the features that will come as we provide voters with the information and context they need to stay informed,” where, for example, “for polls or vote-related videos, information the panel directs viewers in the EU to Google’s “how to vote” and “how to register to vote” features, YouTube said.

When viewers search for information about European candidates, an information bar appears at the top of the search results, highlighting information about the candidate, such as their political party, and a link to the Google search.

At the bottom of the information panel there may be a link to the candidate’s official channel, the platform says.

“In the final weeks of the campaign, we’ll be showing reminders on the YouTube homepage about where and how to vote,” and on Election Day, viewers “will be able to view an election results dashboard that will appear at the top.” survey results.” find or below videos related to the European elections.”

According to YouTube, “This dashboard will link to Google’s election results feature, allowing people to follow election results in real time.”

A “link that shows real-time results” of the election will also be available on the YouTube homepage.

“This all builds on our current features that highlight information from trusted sources such as social media, search results, home page and following panel,” he notes.

Youtube remembers that technology policies define what is prohibited on the platform and apply to all content, regardless of language or political viewpoint.

“We have strict policies against hate speech, harassment and cyberbullying, incitement to violent content and some types of election disinformation” and, for example, “we remove content that misleads voters about how to vote or that encourages interference in democratic process.” he emphasizes.

“Our global team of reviewers, using a combination [machine learning] machine learning, applies these policies at scale, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” and “our intelligence department has also been working for months to stay ahead of emerging issues and trends that could impact the EU elections, both internally, and outside of YouTube,” he explains.

The platform also aims to increase transparency in AI-generated content.

“We recognize that attackers may try to exploit generative AI tools during election periods – which is why we are providing multiple layers of transparency and protection, including for the next European elections,” he emphasizes.

“We will now require creators to disclose whether the video they upload contains altered or synthetic content and whether it is realistic,” and “we will then add a transparency marker to realistic, synthetic, or altered content so that viewers have context.”

For election content, “the tag will appear in the video itself and in its description” and, in some cases, “we may also add a tag even if the creator does not disclose it, especially if the use of altered or synthetic content has resulted in the potential for confusion or misleading misleading the audience.”

“This is a critical area that we have been investing in for some time,” YouTube says.
