The willow trunk, growing from the root of a tree that appeared on the site of the Apothecary Garden in Moscow even before Peter the Great, fell due to snowfall in May, said the director of the Botanical Garden of the State University from Moscow, Doctor of Biological Sciences Vladimir Chub, said on May 9 in a comment to RBC.
According to Chub, when founding the Apothecary Garden, Peter the Great planted larches, firs and spruces. At the same time, as he pointed out, “Willows grew on the edge of the pond even before the garden was founded, pre-Petrine willows.”.
The professor explained that the wind and snowfall in Moscow caused one of the 40-year-old willow trunks, which grew from a stump of unprecedented size, to fall. The remaining tree trunks were not damaged. The scientist noted: “We hope that the tree will sprout new growth from the stump and recover.”.
As Chub said, the falling of the trunks that grew from the roots of willows in pre-Petrine times had already occurred before. Notably, the last time this happened was in the 1980s.
The landscape director of the Aptekarsky garden, Artem Parshin, explained on his Telegram channel that the willow in the garden is “approximately 40 years of growth from a willow stump of unprecedented size”. As he pointed out, with a high probability this willow- “the oldest tree not only in the garden, but in the entire historical center of Moscow”.
We remind you that the Moscow Apothecary Garden is the oldest botanical garden in Russia. It was founded in 1706 by Peter the Great. At the same time, the basis of the Apothecary Garden collection were medicinal plants grown in the Gostiny Dvor pharmacy, as well as plants from the Izmailovsky Garden of the palace.
Moscow University acquired the Apothecary Garden in 1805; this botanical garden is still listed as part of Moscow State University.
