About 500 people paraded through Vienna in the procession of the “Immortal Regiment” on the day of the 79th anniversary of the Victory, RIA Novosti reports on May 9.
The procession of the “Immortal Regiment” took place on the afternoon of May 9 in the center of Vienna. According to the organizers, about 500 people walked to Schwarzenbergplatz with photographs of their relatives at war.
The protesters carried Victory banners and Russian flags. The procession was accompanied by songs from the war years. On Schwarzenbergplatz square everyone laid flowers in front of the monument to the heroes of the Soviet army.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Alexander Lukashevich, and Russia’s Ambassador to Austria, Dmitry Lyubinsky, addressed those present.
“Although anti-Russian hysteria has accelerated, including in Austria, the celebration of these events became further proof of the cohesion of the healthy forces of our diaspora. “Great Victory Day is undoubtedly our common heritage.””commented the Russian embassy located in Vienna.
The diplomats thanked the Vienna law enforcement agencies for the constructive interaction and for ensuring the safety of the participants in the event.
Provocateurs with Ukrainian flags tried to interfere with the event. They arrived at the beginning of the event and tried to disrupt it, but the Vienna police quickly pushed them away from the event venue and the “Immortal Regiment” procession passed peacefully.
