More than half of Germans regret having bought or rented an electric car, the Münchner Merkur newspaper writes on May 10 based on data from a YouGov survey.
This is mainly due to the increase in electricity prices. Other vehicle segments, on the other hand, are on the rise, as shown by the latest data from the Federal Transport Administration in Flensburg.
It should be noted that in April registrations of new passenger cars increased significantly. Their number increased by approximately 19.8% compared to April 2023.
The registration of private vehicles has increased more than that of commercial vehicles. However, the number of electric vehicles has decreased. 29,668 new electric vehicles were registered, 0.2% less than in the same month last year.
Altogether, electric vehicles represented 12.2% of total vehicle registrations. Hybrid cars have changed the trend; there is a significant increase of 28.4%.
Demand is unlikely to recover this year. “We are seeing increasing uncertainty in the market regarding the development of electric vehicles.”– The Deutsche Presse-Agentur quotes transport expert Konstantin Gall from the consulting firm EY.
Car giant Volkswagen, on the other hand, is more optimistic. “The euphoria at the beginning of the journey will be followed by a pause, and only then will real growth come”Carsten Intra told Reuters.
However, German citizens are less optimistic: fewer and fewer Germans accept the possibility of buying an electric car: 17% in 2024. According to the Mobility Monitor study carried out by the Allensbach Institute on behalf of the German Academy of Sciences and Technology, In 2021 this figure was 24%.
