A girls’ school in the North Waziristan district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was blown up by unknown assailants after torturing its guard, Dawn reported on May 10.
The incident was reported to have occurred overnight. The explosion damaged two rooms in the building. There were no casualties among children or adults in the explosion.
According to the agency, this is the only girls’ school in Shewa district and its administration has already received several threatening letters.
Recall that in May last year two girls’ schools in Mir Ali district were attacked in a similar manner. Then the attacks also occurred at night, so no one was injured by the explosions.
It should be noted that the situation of school education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is threatening. According to local sources, in some areas up to 75% of boys and up to 95% of girls do not attend school. At the same time, the total number of children in the province who lack school education reaches 5 million and the school deficit reaches 25 thousand.
It should be added that the Pashtun population of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially in the former tribal area (which includes, among other things, the aforementioned North Waziristan) has a mentality and cultural traditions close to Afghanistan, where the current authorities have practically closed women’s access to higher education.
According to media reports, one of the main reasons why children do not go to school is the poverty of the local population. Many families simply cannot afford to send their children to school. Instead, children perform various unskilled or low-skilled jobs, allowing their families to somehow make ends meet. In this sense, even when the government takes measures to return children to schools, they are not very effective.
