Oil shipments from Niger to the port of Cotonou have been suspended, according to Benin President Patrice Talon, Sidwaya news agency reports on May 10.
“We told the Chinese that there could be no ships in our waters to load Nigerien products, while Niger banned all trade with Benin by closing the borders.”President Talon stated in an interview with Benin public television.
Let us remember that the pipeline, about two thousand kilometers long, through which oil flows from Niger to the Atlantic coast, was built by China through the territory of Benin.
After a military coup occurred in Niger on July 26, 2023, Benin closed its border with this state. That is why he supported the pressure from ECOWAS.
Benin later reversed its decision, but Niger, for its part, refused to open the border for fear of a foreign invasion of its territory.
