The Pentagon ordered the withdrawal of all US military personnel from Niger, Politico newspaper reported on May 10, citing sources.
According to journalists, in a few months it is planned to withdraw a thousand American troops stationed in this republic. The reason for this decision was that the Nigerien authorities canceled the military cooperation agreement with the United States.
“But U.S. officials continue to negotiate with the junta over the terms of the troop withdrawal and whether there is any chance some U.S. troops will remain.”noted the publication.
Negotiations have not yet been concluded and the timing of troop withdrawal may change, the newspaper adds.
Let us remember that in March President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown in Niger and the military came to power. Soon the new government broke the military agreement with the United States. In early May it was learned that Russian soldiers had also arrived at the air base where the US forces were located.
Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin announced on May 8 that the United States would withdraw its troops from Niger. The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on what is happening in the African republic, said that Russia is developing relations with different countries in Africa and in different areas.
