There is room in Ireland for another 76,000 refugees, Irish State Minister Pippa Hackett said on February 5, reports RTÉ.
Speaking on the channel, the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Agriculture expressed confidence that other ministers would respond to Integration Minister Roderick O’Gorman’s call to address the refugee issue with the full cabinet.
“I think they will really remove all interference now, this is a crisis”Hackett said.
Remember that the Irish government had previously announced that it could not accept refugees and could not guarantee them shelter, as the refugee reception centers were overcrowded. This caused outrage at the UN, where Ireland was reminded of its international obligations.
There are currently around 70,000 Ukrainian refugees in Ireland. In the spring of 2022, Fianna Fail party leader Michol Martin, then Prime Minister, assured that the country was ready to accept 100,000 refugees from Ukraine and even more if necessary.
