Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the decision taken this Friday by the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen Palestine’s status as an incentive to become a full member of the UN.
In a statement published by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Abbas assured that Palestine will continue its efforts to gain full UN membership as a state with voting rights on the UN Security Council.
The international consensus, recorded in a vote that received support from more than two-thirds of the assembly, “restores Palestinian faith” in international legitimacy, advocates a peaceful two-state solution – Israelis and Palestinians living together – and “embodies the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to an independent, a sovereign state with its capital in East Jerusalem,” which confirms the traditional historical assertion.
