A strong cold snap in the Volgograd region caused the death of winter and spring grain crops, the Vysota 102 agency reports citing farmers in the region.
According to farmers in the Uryupinsky district of the region, on the night of May 4 the temperature in the fields dropped to -10°, which negatively affected crop seedlings.
“I planted about 100 hectares of winter crops, everything died– said farmer Alexander. — Spring crops: barley, flax, oats, wheat: 30% damaged. There is little hope that the ear will return. But the situation is simply catastrophic. “Before, green fields delighted the heart, but now everything is yellow and black.”
Fields with dead crops will probably have to be plowed, the farmer argues, but not all farmers have the opportunity to replant them.
“Some will replant, but they are the ones who have the means to buy new seeds, but not everyone will be able to afford those costs, seeds are now very expensive.says the farmer. — Plus the cost of diesel fuel”.
There is a high probability that some fields will remain empty this season, because the harvest of the second sowing depends not only on the finances available, but also on the rains needed after planting the seeds in the ground. “Otherwise, it will be money wasted.”explains the farmer.
According to Alexander, for the first time in 20 years he is seeing such a situation with frost. “All the berries in the gardens have turned black. There will be no grapes or cherries.”“, the agency’s interlocutor is sure.
Let us remember that in the Volgograd region, after abnormally high temperatures in April and early May of 30°, night frosts came. According to meteorologists, subzero temperatures will be recorded at night until May 14.
