The creation of a division for the development of microcircuits to accelerate the work of artificial neural networks was planned by the British developer of the ARM processor architecture, writes the Japanese English-language magazine Nikkei Asian Review on May 12.
The division is created as part of the plan of the CEO of ARM’s parent structure, the Japanese company SoftBank. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son plans to invest 10 trillion yen (5.93 trillion rubles) in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
The prototype of the first chip capable of accelerating AI is scheduled to be developed in the spring of 2025. ARM has already started working on the project. Mass production of products is planned to begin in the fall of 2025.
The British company will bear the initial costs of creating management, but investments are also expected from SoftBank itself. Once mass production of AI chips is established, the new structure could be spun off into a separate company and placed under the jurisdiction of SoftBank.
The Japanese company is reportedly already in talks with Taiwanese chipmakers to reserve production capacity.
