The last private property in Svalbard is for sale, writes Аftenposten on May 11.
A giant property is for sale just a few kilometers south of Longyearbyen. It is sold for 4,000 million dollars.
The South Fagerfjord hotel is located on the southwestern edge of Spitsbergen and covers an area of 60 square kilometers or 60 thousand acres. Thus, the price per square meter is just under 67,000 Norwegian crowns. In comparison, in Oslo the metro costs just under 92,000 NOK.
The hotel is approximately 40 kilometers from Longyearbyen and has more than five kilometers of coastline, mountains, fjords and Arctic wildlife.
“This is the only opportunity for the buyer to gain a foothold in the far north and create a strategic bridgehead”Per Killingstad, a lawyer representing the sellers, tells Bloomberg.
Let us remember that any buyer, whether a foreign state, a company or an individual, is obliged to comply with the terms of the 1920 Treaty of Spitsbergen, which recognizes the sovereignty of Norway and prohibits military use of the facility. More than 40 countries, including China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, have signed the treaty.
