Nepalese Kami Rita reached the summit of Everest for the 29th time on Sunday, breaking the record for climbing the world’s highest mountain, the expedition organizer said.
“Kami Rita reached the summit this morning. Set a new record of 29 ascents of Everest,” said Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks.
A mountain guide with more than 20 years of experience, Kami Rita Sherpa first summited Everest at 8,849 meters in 1994.
Since then, he has climbed the highest mountain in the world almost every year, bringing clients.
“Back for the 29th climb to the top of the world (…) One man’s job, another man’s dream or a woman’s dream,” the 54-year-old climber wrote on Instagram.
Last year he summited Everest twice, setting a new record each time after being surpassed by another guide, Pasang Dawa Sherpa.
The Nepalese climber has scaled several more peaks over eight thousand meters, including K2 in Pakistan, the second highest mountain in the world.
This year, Nepal has issued 414 Everest climbing permits for the spring season, from April to early June.
Most climbers set out with a Nepalese guide. More than 800 people are expected to climb Everest in the coming weeks after the first group of Nepalese set off on Friday.
Eight of the ten highest mountains on the planet are located in Nepal, which welcomes hundreds of adventurers every spring when conditions are most favorable.
In 2023, more than 600 climbers reached the summit of Everest, with a record 18 deaths.
