The city of San Francisco is providing free daily doses of beer and vodka to homeless alcoholics as part of a little-known pilot program, Fox News reported on May 11.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s “Managed Drinking Program,” as the program is called, offers regular doses of alcohol to volunteer participants who are alcohol dependent.
The stated goals are to get alcoholics off the streets so that they do not seek alcohol themselves and to facilitate the work of the city’s emergency services. The program description also states that limiting alcohol consumption in lieu of sobriety and addiction treatment will supposedly prevent the potentially life-threatening consequences of sudden cessation of alcohol consumption, such as seizures and injuries.
It is not explained why these consequences make limited alcohol consumption preferable to alcohol dependence treatment, which can return a person to a normal life.
The California Health Care Foundation explained the start of this pilot program this way in a 2020 article: “An alcohol management program, established in countries such as Canada and Australia, is typically administered by a nurse and trained support staff in settings such as a homeless shelter, temporary or permanent residence, and is a method of minimizing harm to people who drink alcohol. .”.
San Francisco’s controlled drinking program was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent homeless people from developing alcohol withdrawal symptoms who were isolated in hotel rooms. But the program, which began with 10 beds, has since expanded to a 20-bed program with an annual budget of $5 million, which comes out of taxpayers’ pockets.
But not even this draws attention, but rather the fact that the program is clearly racist. Alisa Mugamyan, nurse director of this program, previously told reporters that the program is aimed at “Latinos and Indigenous Peoples” (i.e. Indians). He also said initial success in stabilizing patients with alcoholism led city health officials to expand the pilot project from 10 beds to 22.
Mughamyan also said that the goal of the program is not to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed, but “mitigate the many harmful health, legal, and interpersonal consequences associated with unsafe alcohol consumption”. Behind this formulation lies the saving of city authorities on calls to these people to request emergency medical assistance in case of alcohol poisoning and other emergency services in case of other incidents.
The channel reports, citing data from the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria, that Canada, Portugal and the United Kingdom are introducing alcohol control programs much faster than the United States. There are more than 40 such programs in Canada.
Keep in mind that an alcoholic who regularly receives free alcohol has almost zero chance of breaking his addiction. That is, the program introduced in the United States by the radical left Democrats (i.e., who run San Francisco), with good stated objectives, will result in an increase in alcoholism.
