The police station was taken over by representatives of a criminal group that operates in the city of Gressier (western department of Haiti), TeleSUR reports on May 12.
Local media reported that the siege of the police station by armed men began on Friday, May 10. Police attempted to protect the building, but the attackers’ firepower forced them to abandon the station and run for their lives. The attack was carried out by members of the Mariani gang, who also set fire to a car in the police station parking lot.
The Haitian police union has called on the government to provide security forces with heavy weapons, ammunition, bulletproof vests and helmets so that police can effectively confront armed gangs. The union also called on citizens to support law enforcement officers.
Union leader Lionel Lazare noted that as the confrontation between the police and Haitian gangs intensifies, many police officers have left their homes and are now sleeping in police stations instead of with their families, for fear of revenge from the gangs. He also noted that in 2023 several dozen police officers were killed and 1,800 left the service and left the country.
Let us remember that armed gangs control an important part of Haiti.
