A patient who received a genetically modified pig kidney for the first time in the world has died in the United States, CBS News reported on May 12.
The death occurred nearly two months after the operation, Massachusetts General Hospital told the television station.
The patient, Richard Slayman, 62, originally from Massachusetts, underwent surgery at a Boston hospital. The operation to transplant a kidney from a genetically modified pig lasted four hours. This was the first case of its kind in medical practice. Doctors noted that Richard had previously undergone a kidney transplant in 2018 and felt well for a long time after the operation. “It was a new chance in life that we decided to give it, despite all the risks.”said one of the surgeons.
It should be noted that the medical institution stressed that there were no indications that the man’s death was a direct consequence of the operation.
Previously, at the University of Maryland (USA), the heart of a genetically modified pig was transplanted into a person for the second time. The previous patient lived with said transplant for two months.
