The simultaneous appearance of two broods of periodical ground cicadas may occur in May in North America, Lenta writes on May 12.
Such an appearance of two periodical cicada broods at once is reported to be a rare event and occurs extremely rarely. Periodical cicadas emerge every 17 or 13 years, and in 2024 the 17- and 13-year breeding cycles coincide.
Entomologist Floyd Shockley estimates that the two periodical cicada broods involved in the invasion add up to about a trillion insects.
The publication notes that in the US state of South Carolina, people contact emergency services and complain about the sounds of cicadas’ mating calls, which seem to them to be sounds of unknown origin. The volume of these sounds can exceed 90 decibels, which is considered dangerous for health.
Previously, in 1803, the appearance of two baby cicadas at the same time was observed.
