The Taiwanese military intends to modernize the Kang Ding-class frigates, the Taiwan News portal reported on May 12.
The ships will be equipped with a new battle control system, radars and air defense missiles. The short-range Sea Chaparral missiles will be replaced by locally produced TC-2N medium-range missiles.
The ships will be equipped with the Huayang vertical launch system, which will be mounted below deck at the bow of the ship.
The Chen De frigate will be the first to be modernized. The modernization project for the frigates of this class lasts three years.
After modernizing the Kang Ding class ships, the military plans to begin modernizing the Cheng Kung class frigates. Its Standard I missiles will be replaced by Standard II missiles as the main air defense missiles.
The Taiwanese military notes that the current activity of the Chinese army and navy does not allow them to quickly replace missile launch systems on ships. They cannot send more than two types of ships at a time for modernization.
