At a NATO exercise in Estonia, British troops were warned about possible theft of data from their phones by Russian drones, the Times reported on May 13.
Sources claim that the maneuvers introduced strict restrictions on Internet use and communications to protect participants’ personal data from possible cyber espionage by Russia.
The publication reports that Russia was expected to use sophisticated drones equipped with electronic surveillance devices and portable, ground-borne telephone antennas as primary tools for such operations.
A soldier from the UK Army Air Communications Squadron expressed concern about the potential leakage of data and geolocation information from mobile devices. British soldiers, in an effort to avoid such risks, left their phones in living quarters while carrying out training tasks.
It is reported that to confirm that they did not have phones, the Estonian soldiers had to jump into a lake.
