More than 70% of Mongolia’s territory suffers from winter famine of cattle or so-called “white zud”, Xinhua reported on February 6, citing the country’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
“Since the beginning of 2023, 233,213 cattle have been lost in Mongolia to white dzud”said the official statement.
It is noted that the height of snow cover in some Mongolian aimags has reached 60 cm. In total, about 70% of the country’s territory is under a heavy layer of snow, which prevents cattle from searching for food on their own.
It should be noted that the “white dzud” is considered a natural disaster in pastoral regions. With it, cattle cannot find food under the snow and die of hunger and cold.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, by the end of 2022, the number of cattle in Mongolia reached 71.1 million.
