an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale has caused the death of hundreds of people in Turkey and Syria, according to the authorities of both countries. There are also thousands of wounded and missing. It is estimated that the number of victims could increase as the hours progress.

The tremor occurred at 04:17 local time (02:17 in the Basque Country) in the province of Kahramanmaras, in the southeast of the country, near the border with Syria.

According to the authorities of Syria, at least 237 people have died and more than 630 have been injured. A spokesman for the Syrian Ministry of Health has indicated that the balance, which is provisional, includes victims from various cities such as the capital, Aleppo, in the north of the country; Hama, 140 kilometers south of the capital; or Latakia, in the west, according to what the Sana news agency has learned.

The country’s authorities have indicated that there are several dozen buildings residential, located in various neighborhoods, which have been collapsed as a result of earthquakes.

The director general of the National Seismic Center, Raed Ahmed, explained that this is the strongest earthquake since 1995, when the national seismic monitoring network was installed.

In Turkey, a first balance indicates that there are at least 76 people dead and 440 wounded. However, these balances of victims may increase, since the search and rescue services are currently doing their work to rescue those who may be found under the rubble of the many buildings that have fallen as a result of the earthquakes.

The Minister of the Interior, Suleyman Soylu, has indicated in a press conference that the Turkish Government has declared the highest level of alarmwhich includes the request for international help, and has sent numerous search and rescue teams to the earthquake zones.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers, has been felt in several cities, as reported by the Turkish television channel TRT Haber.

Subsequently, they have registered numerous aftershocksamong which three of them stand out, having reached a magnitude of 6.4, 6.5 and 6.6 on the Richter scale.
