According to an official report seen by Lusa this Monday, the Mozambican authorities have certified 115 higher education courses in 11 institutions out of 117 courses in force in 2023, including 59 new ones.
“During 2023, 117 higher education institutions and 11 training institutions were assessed, of which 115 (98.3%) were accredited and two (1.7%) were not accredited due to poor performance,” the report said on assessing and ensuring the quality of teaching. National Council for the Assessment of Quality in Higher Education (CNAQ).
The document adds that of the 115 courses recognized, eight were accredited conditionally for two years, four conditionally for three years and the rest for five years.
In its report, CNAQ also states that based on the metrics assessed, 92.3% of the courses performed “excellently” in terms of the “overall mission and objectives of the organic division.”
Overall, according to the CNAQ report, most courses performed “excellently” in key indicators, namely in terms of curriculum, teaching staff, research and extension, and infrastructure.
The city of Maputo was the city with the largest number of accredited courses (35.65% of the total), followed by the province of Zambezia (16.52%).
According to the report, by academic level, of the 115 accredited courses, 77 are bachelor’s degrees, 32 are master’s degrees and six are doctorates.
The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said in January that only eight out of every 100 Mozambicans who are old enough to obtain higher education are in this subsystem (253,227 students in 2022). He added that this figure is lower than the South African average, which is currently estimated at 33%, highlighting the need to “expand supply”.
“One of the problems that persists in the field of higher education is the disproportionate distribution of the student population among the regions and provinces of the country,” he explained.
