Polish authorities announced this Monday the suspension of negotiations with Ukraine on agricultural issues after months of protests by Polish farmers accusing some Ukrainian negotiators of corruption.
Polish Deputy Minister of Agriculture Michal Kolodziejczak said in an interview with the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna newspaper that some of the Ukrainian representatives who will participate in the negotiations on Tuesday are accused of corruption crimes in their country.
“We will not negotiate with people accused of corruption,” said the Polish deputy minister, although he did not provide details on this matter.
According to Kolodziejczak, the Ministry of Agriculture of Poland has not yet managed to solve all the problems of the industry, since the situation is “difficult.”
However, the Polish deputy minister said that the latest demonstrations in Poland’s agricultural sector are an attempt by “interested” politicians to “campaign for European elections.”
Kołodziejczak stressed that the largest agrarian protests in recent decades were recorded “after PiS (the Law and Justice Party, a right-wing political formation that lost government after the elections in October 2023) lost power.”
“This is a version imposed by PiS supporters,” the Polish politician complained.
Polish farmers have been protesting against the Polish government and the European Green Deal since February 9.
The industry demands to limit or completely ban the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, which are usually cheaper, and also to strengthen the domestic market.
They are also critical of policies promoted by the European Union (EU), which aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
