The Council of the European Union (EU) this Monday officially adopted rules dictating the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from heavy vehicles.
The updated rules introduce new targets for reducing CO2 emissions from road transport: 45% from 2030, 65% from 2035 and 90% after 2040, the Council said.
These targets will apply to medium-duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks over 7.5 tonnes and coach buses and related company vehicles from 2035.
On the other hand, the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 15% by 2025 is maintained, when it will be established that all city buses should be zero-emission, to be introduced no later than 2035, with an interim target of 90% by 2030 for this categories.
Coaches will be exempt from this target because they will be considered tourist buses for the purpose of measuring emissions reductions.
The European Commission has already welcomed the approval of the new rules, which are part of the European Green Deal.
