This Monday, the European Union (EU) officially adopted a recent review to simplify the rules of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), responding to protests and concerns in the sector, which comes into force this month.
The new rules come into force the day after publication in the Official Journal of the EU, until the end of the month, and some rules relating to environmental conditions for the 2024 application year may apply retroactively.
The proposal was put forward by the European Commission on March 15, debated by fellow lawmakers in record time, and the European Parliament approved the package on April 24.
According to the statement, the EU Council officially approved this Monday the proposal, which responds “to the problems encountered during the first year of application of the new CAP.”
The review responds to concerns raised by EU farmers in recent months and takes into account the impact of geopolitical events such as the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as extreme weather events such as drought and floods.
The sector also complains about unfair competition from third countries and the weak position of farmers in the supply chain, who sell their products below cost.
