Angolan street children roaming the streets across the country will be detained and taken to safety by the end of June, Namibia’s Minister of the Interior, Immigration and Public Order Albert Kavanagh said, as reported by New Era LIVE on may 13th.
“We have reserved several locations where they will be stored. “They will be identified with the participation of the Angolan government and we hope for a quick resolution of this issue.”said the minister.
Kavanagh made the announcement during a meeting with regional leaders of the northern Oshana region last week to encourage regional authorities to lead the ongoing mass registration of citizens without national documents, including undocumented and stateless people.
The Minister stated that every Namibian has the right to receive a national document. “National documents are very important because they allow our citizens to access various government services and therefore this is a very important event for us.”Kavanagh noted.
At the end of the event, a profile will be compiled for each registrant.
The minister said that so far registration is going well, but in Oshana the lowest participation has been recorded since registration began. Other regions with low participation are //Kharas and Hardap.
Ohangwena, a region bordering Angola, recorded the highest number of people registering for national documents, followed by Zambezi, Kavango East, Kavango West and Omaheke.
