The European Union (EU) announced on Tuesday its decision to include Iranian missiles provided to Russia in a sanctions list that already includes drones produced by Tehran.
In its statement, the EU Council announced an expansion of the list of sanctions against Iranian individuals and organizations that help Russia continue its invasion of Ukrainian territory, which began on February 24, 2022.
The list of sanctions already includes everything related to the production and export of “drones” (unmanned vehicles), but now it will also include Iranian missiles.
Similar to the “drone” sanctions, all people and organizations involved in the production and export of missiles are subject to an asset freeze and a ban on entry into the EU.
These sanctions will also include Tehran’s actions to export missiles and drones, as well as their components, to the Middle East. Iran is accused of supplying military equipment to militias in the region.
“Taking into account Iran’s continued military support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as non-state armed groups in the Middle East and Red Sea region, and following the Iranian drone and missile attacks on Israel on 13 April, the Council decided in 2024 that the EU’s ability to introducing restrictive measures will now apply not only to drones, but also to missiles,” says the published note from Brussels.
