Over the past two years, South Korean customs authorities have seized more than 1,400 kg of drugs, KBS World reported on May 14.
According to the Korea Customs Service, a total of 1,417 kg of illegal drugs were seized between May 2022 and April 2024.
This amounts to about two cases of smuggling per day, and the total volume is enough to house more than 2,600 people at a time.
The customs agency estimates that the drugs seized this year were transported by international criminal organizations in smaller quantities, likely due to increased surveillance by the agency.
The service said it plans to designate customs inspection areas at Incheon International Airport in the first half of this year to inspect luggage upon arrival of passengers arriving from countries that report high levels of drug-related crime.
