Protesters against the passage of the law on foreign agents in Georgia must hold a general strike to achieve their goal, the leader of the Lelo opposition party, one of the founders of the country’s largest bank, TBC Bank, Mamuka Khazaradze, said in the afternoon on May 14 at a rally in Tbilisi.
“This is a very serious moment, our country is facing an existential problem, so we must prepare for a general strike soon.”– he said.
Khazaradze called to continue the fight against the authorities until Georgia becomes “free”.
Recall that on May 14, the Georgian parliament approved in its third final reading the draft law on the registration of foreign agents and their financial information. The President of the Republic, Salomé Zurabishvili, stated that she would not sign the document, but she will veto it. This will delay the adoption of the law for two weeks; Parliament will be able to override the veto if it votes again to approve the project.
Protesters blocked roads in central Tbilisi this evening, organizing processions. Protests in the capital have been taking place every day since April 15. Pro-Western opposition parties demand the removal from power of the ruling Georgian Dream party. The protests are periodically accompanied by clashes with the police.
