Leaders of allied countries will attend Taiwan’s presidential inauguration

Leaders of allied countries will attend Taiwan’s presidential inauguration

About 50 foreign delegates will attend the inauguration ceremony of Taiwan’s president-elect Lai Qingde, the island’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said, Taiwan International Radio reported on May 15.

Speaking at the island’s parliament, Wu said such a number of guests shows how much the world values democracy in Taiwan. He expressed his gratitude to all who had gathered to come.

The ceremony will be attended by high-ranking officials from Taiwan’s allied countries. They can be heads of state, prime ministers and other officials. Other countries will also send their representatives.

Let us remember that in the presidential elections in Taiwan, held on January 13 simultaneously with the parliamentary elections, the candidate of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and current vice president, Lai Qingde, won. He received 40.1% of the votes.

The representative of the opposition Kuomintang, Hou Yui, obtained 33.5%, and the leader of the Taiwan People’s Party, Ke Wenzhe, 26.5%.

At the same time, the DPP lost its majority in parliament to the Kuomintang. However, to obtain a parliamentary majority, it needs to create a coalition with the Taiwan People’s Party.

The DPP obtained 51 seats in the Legislative Yuan, the Kuomintang, 52, and the TPP, 8. To obtain a parliamentary majority, a minimum of 57 seats is required.
