On Tuesday, a Swedish television channel reported that the Sweden Democrats (SD), a far-right pro-government party, used 23 fake social media accounts to tarnish the image of opponents as well as the leaders of the government’s majority.
A TV4 investigative program journalist has identified social media accounts allegedly controlled by the communications department of a far-right party.
The party will also use artificial intelligence to attribute comments to political figures who would never make them, such as false statements about gangs made on the social network Tiktok attributed to opposition leader Magdalena Andersson.
Since the first revelations of the investigation, the first episode of which was published on May 7, criticism has descended on Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his government, accused of being unwilling to take concrete measures to curb the far-right party. accountable.
“Kristersson shows that he does not care about protecting Swedish democracy from the constant sabotage of the Sweden Democrats. He is not prepared to risk the support of the SD and therefore his own position as prime minister,” a Dagens editorial criticized the daily. Nyheter.
The investigation also found that fake social media accounts were also used against other parties in the SD-backed government coalition.
One of these accounts posted a message ridiculing Liberal Party leader and Labor Minister Johan Pehrsson.
In a conversation with a TV4 journalist, an employee of the party’s communications department called the organization a “troll factory,” referring to accounts whose purpose is to tarnish the image of people and institutions.
Kristersson has already asked the far-right party to answer questions about these “dangerous practices.”
“I am completely against slander of political opponents and coalition parties. I am completely against false reports, which can be very dangerous,” the head of government said at a press conference.
Far-right party leader Jimmy Akesson, in a video posted on the social network YouTube, classified the investigation as an “internal influence operation.”
“This is an inside influence operation carried out by the entire left-liberal ‘establishment,’” Akesson said.
