Almost 700 Mozambican citizens were deported by three neighboring countries in April, mostly due to illegal immigration, according to the National Migration Service (Senami), consulted by Lusa today.
According to Senami, 658 Mozambican nationals were deported from South Africa, 31 from Zimbabwe and two from Eswatini, a total that compares with just six in the same month in 2023.
“Illegal immigration (of undocumented persons) became the largest offense recorded in the statistics of deported citizens, with 691 cases,” Senami cites data.
Deportations took place mainly from the southern border posts: Ressano Garcia (658 people) and Namaacha (two) in Maputo province, and Pafuri (31 people) in Gaza province.
Conversely, during the same period, Senami denied entry into Mozambique 87 foreign nationals who attempted to do so at the relevant crossing points, 47% of them through Maputo International Airport, essentially (45%) due to “lack of entry visa, means existence and confirmation of place of residence.”
Of the foreign nationals denied entry into the country, the most prominent were Zimbabwean citizens (36), followed by Ethiopians, Indians and Sudanese (seven cases each).
